What Is Sexual Harassment?

Sexual harassment is a type of sex discrimination that can be physical, verbal or written. Sexual harassment can happen to anyone, regardless of their gender, sex or sexual orientation. You can be harassed by a coworker, supervisor, vendor or customer of any gender, sex or sexual orientation.

At The Mirroknian Law Firm, P.C., we have extensive experience helping employees in the Los Angeles area who have been sexually harassed at work. Sexual harassment can include behaviors such as:

  • Requesting or making sexual advances
  • Physical assault and other forms of unwanted touching
  • Making obscene comments or jokes
  • Sharing sexually explicit photographs or drawings
  • Sending harassing emails, texts or instant messages

One isolated joke may not be illegal sexual harassment, but if the behavior is so persistent or extreme that you cannot do your job, it can create a hostile work environment, which is illegal.

In addition, workers may experience “quid pro quo” harassment. This is when a person offers raises or promotions in exchange for sexual favors, or they fire or demote someone who refuses their advances.

What To Do If You Are Harassed At Work

It can be scary to report harassment, especially if it comes from a supervisor. But it’s important to follow your workplace’s policy of reporting harassment and make sure you have a record of what happened. You can, however, talk to an attorney at any point in the process.

As soon as you think you may be experiencing sexual harassment at work, it’s important to document the situation as thoroughly as you can. Write down what happened in as much detail as you can remember. Save any emails, texts, photos or other physical evidence of harassment.
